Come explore the vast and wonderful landscape of Savuti with an experienced guide opening your eyes to the wonder of the San bushman who marked their stories in the form of awe-inspiring rock paintings. Guests are permitted to get out and maneuver the little way up the rocky hills to view the artworks, found on the South-east cliffs overlooking the Savuti channel. Guests can also marvel at the historic baobabs in the area and lookout
for the seldom-seen klipspringer antelope.

Overlooking the arid river channel of Savuti, which today is only flooded by the high water of the Zambezi when flooding, you will find these excellent paintings on the walls of an “abri”, a typical spot to stay for the hunter/
gatherers. The paintings, although not carbon dated, are estimated rot be between 3000 to 4000 years old

They depict various animals of present and past Savuti vintage. Eland, elephant, sable, giraffe, a puffadder, and a hippo from wetter times feature on the same panel. A mixture of plant juices, and animal fat coloured with the rusty ironoxide from the rocks, was used to create this incredibly durable paint, but its exact composition is unknown. There are 22  known sites of paintings around Savuti, most being very faint due to exposure to the
elements.
